Leak: The Clock

Owen knew the material, and that was the maddening part. Sit him down with no clock and he'd solve anything. On the actual test he scored 1240, and nobody could explain the gap.

His parents had heard "he just needs more practice" from everyone, so he practiced, and got the same result. The problem was never whether Owen knew the content. The moment the timer started he'd burn four minutes on one hard question, panic about the clock, then rush and miss three easy ones he'd have got at home. More practice on the same approach just made the habit stronger.

So we stopped adding problems and fixed how he worked through them. The audit pinned it to pacing, so we drilled the order: which questions to take first, when to move on, how to bank the easy points before the hard ones. Then we ran timed, proctored simulations until that rhythm held under pressure.

He scored 1490, a 250-point jump, and almost none of it came from new content. It came from finally being able to use the content he already had.

"Owen always knew his stuff at home and then bombed the timed sections, and I could not figure out why. It was all pacing. Once they fixed how he worked through the test under the clock, his score jumped 250 points. The number finally matches the kid I know he is."Owen’s mom
