Which colleges require the SAT for fall 2027?

More than 60 colleges and university systems. That includes the entire Florida public system, the entire Georgia public system, and UT Austin, alongside the selective privates that led the return.

The shape of the list

Three groups matter for a family planning around fall 2027 admission.

The public systems. Florida and Georgia never left, and their entire public systems require a score. UT Austin reinstated its requirement and joined them.

The selective privates. Among the 9 most selective schools in the country, 7 require a score for the class of 2027. For the class of 2028 it becomes all of them, Ivies included. The full cohort-by-cohort picture is in our reinstatement breakdown.

The quiet requirers. Plenty of schools that stayed “test-optional” on paper still gate first cuts on a score: BS/MD programs, Academic Index screens, and top computer science programs where admits cluster near a 780 in math.

The date that decides everything

For the class of 2027, the October SAT is the last date that’s safe for early decision deadlines. Count backward from October: a meaningful jump takes ten or twelve weeks. That makes the summer the real preparation window, and “we’ll start once school settles” a plan that quietly misses ED.

The direction of travel

The list is growing, not shrinking. Schools have been reinstating the requirement one after another, and no major school is moving the other way. Planning around test-optional in 2026 means planning around a policy in retreat.
